A few miles north of the Capitol sits a Gothic Revival cottage that most of Washington drives right past, President Lincoln's Cottage. For a quarter of his presidency (three summers in the middle of a Civil War) he rode out here most evenings on horseback, away from the noise and the office-seekers, to think. It was in this cottage, in September of 1862, that he finished drafting the Emancipation Proclamation. One of the quietest addresses in the city, with one of the loudest stories. This print captures that particular late-afternoon quality of the place — warm light, tall trees, and a man with something heavy on his mind.
