The lighting of the National Menorah (the world’s largest) is a tradition that goes back to 1979 when President Jimmy Carter first lit one.

Hanukkah was first celebrated in The White House in 1951 when Israel gave president Harry Truman a menorah as a gift. The 2021 lighting was attended by Douglas Emhoff, first Jewish spouse of a U.S. President or Vice President.
