In February 2026, the Smithsonian's National Zoo welcomed its first elephant calf in nearly 25 years — a female Asian elephant named Linh Mai, chosen by public vote. She arrived after a 21-month pregnancy, the longest gestation of any land animal, and was walking on her own within five hours of being born. Asian elephants are endangered, and her birth was part of a coordinated conservation breeding program meant to strengthen the genetic diversity of the species across North America.
This illustration captures the scene any DC parent knows well: a small human in a stroller, eyes wide, meeting a very large animal for the first time. A celebration of the Zoo, the herd, and the gentle giants that have anchored DC childhoods for generations. Printed on archival paper.
