There are many stories told on Día de Muertos in Mexico and Central America, but my favorite starts with a huge snake guarding a mountain, where all dead people live. She is biting her tail, and once a year she opens it to take a breath - and that's when the residents can go out and visit their relatives on Earth for one day. I've been to whole towns where people get dressed as the deceased, and for one day, the streets get full of dancing skeletons representing the politicians, film stars and local celebrities that passed away that year. For this image, I thought I could bring that energy to Mount Pleasant (la montpleza), one of my favorite DC neighborhoods and a community that has also been hit the hardest by COVID-19 cases and unemployment. Happy Día de Muertos!
