On June 12, 1989 the director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art decided to cancel the Robert Mapplethrope’s retrospective, bowing down to conservative lawmakers' pressure to bar NEA funds: the show included sexually explicit and homoerotic images.

Once again, the Congress had overstepped in DC public life - and the locals were not happy. Numerous artists canceled their own Corcoran shows and the director was soon forced to resign. The Corcoran’s never fully recovered after the scandal.

In this postcard, Mapplethrope’s images are projected on the historic facade of the lonely building, while the lion at the doorstep keeps on sleeping.
