Our beautiful city is changing at such an accelerated pace that many of its residents struggle to catch up. And when they see themselves surrounded by a world no longer theirs, sometimes they also disappear.

The Carnegie Library in Mount Vernon Square is a great example of this gentrifying process. Once the city’s central library (and D.C.’s first desegregated public building), the library has suffered in recent years from significant neglect.

I chose to portray this beautiful building as it is now, stuffed with hoses and material construction. Some people may rejoice that they will have access to such a beautiful piece of architecture, but others will be clearly out of place. And the big inscription, at the entrance (“A University for the People”) will no longer make sense.
